Can you run a Polar Tint franchise as a side business?

The honest answer: not as a hands-off side income

Polar Tint is an owner-operator business, and the Franchise Agreement (§7.13) requires the owner's, or Managing Owner's, active, continuing and substantial personal involvement and hands-on supervision at all times, not just in the first year. Opening a shop means building the install team, setting the service standard, and developing the local customer base — all at once.

That is not work you can do in the evenings around another full-time job, and we would rather say so directly than let a franchisee find out the hard way.

How an Operations Manager or a partnership changes the picture

Two structures change who does the daily work, but neither removes the owner. First, FDD Item 15 lets you hire a trained Operations Manager to supervise and manage day-to-day on-site operations; you, or your Managing Owner, still owe the business active, continuing and substantial personal involvement and hands-on supervision at all times (Franchise Agreement §7.13). Second, a couple or business partners who buy through a company or partnership can split the roles from the start: the co-owner who serves as Managing Owner must meet the equity and training requirements in FDD Item 15 and provide that hands-on supervision, while another co-owner can contribute capital without running the shop day to day. Every owner still signs the Owner’s Guaranty (FDD Item 15).

What a partner-operator structure requires

If you are the capital partner rather than the day-to-day operator, the partner who serves as Managing Owner must complete the full 65-hour training program — 40 classroom hours plus 25 on-the-job (FDD Item 11) — and be approved by Polar Tint before opening (FDD Item 15), and must provide hands-on supervision at all times, not just through build-out and launch (Franchise Agreement §7.13). Why this is not a passive-income product

The semi-absentee and side-business framings run on the same rule: Polar Tint is a real, active small business, not a passive investment.

A trainable-installer labor model and an operations playbook — pricing guidance, a supply relationship through affiliated manufacturer Glacier Manufacturing, local marketing through affiliate Frostbite Marketing — reduce how much you have to build from scratch, but none of it removes the need for a present operator, whether that is you or a partner.

You still set your own prices, subject to any maximum or minimum prices Polar Tint establishes (Franchise Agreement §7.3).
