California Vehicle Code §26708: front side windows may take only clear, colorless film that itself passes ≥88% VLT, with glass plus film ≥70% (FMVSS 205) and an installer's signed certificate kept in the vehicle. Rear side windows unrestricted; rear window unrestricted only with outside mirrors on both sides. Medical exemption (§26708(b)(10), §26708.2) covers removable sun screens of ≥35% transmittance, not darker film.

Can I legally tint front side windows in Los Angeles?
Only with clear film.
California Vehicle Code §26708(d) allows material on the front side windows only if it is clear, colorless and transparent, has a visible light transmittance of at least 88% on its own, keeps the window glazing with film applied at or above the 70% minimum in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205, is designed to block the sun's UVA rays, and the driver carries a certificate signed by the installing company identifying the installer and the film manufacturer.
Side windows behind the driver are exempt under §26708(b)(4), and the rear window is exempt under §26708(b)(8) if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides.
Are there Polar Tint results from Los Angeles I can review?
No. Per Item 20 of Polar Tint's 2026 Franchise Disclosure Document, the system had three outlets at the end of 2025 — two company-owned and one franchised — all in Nevada, so there is no Los Angeles operating history. Financial performance for the two company-owned Las Vegas-area shops (owned by a Polar Tint affiliate) is disclosed in FDD Item 19; Polar Tint makes no projections for a Los Angeles shop, and your results may differ.
Does California have a medical exemption for window tint?
Not for dark film on the front side windows. California Vehicle Code §26708(b)(10) allows removable sun-screening devices, not applied film, on the front side windows when the driver or a front-seat passenger carries a letter signed by a licensed physician and surgeon, or by a licensed optometrist for a visual condition.
Section 26708.2 requires those devices to be held in place so they can be readily removed, and §26708(b)(10) bars their use during darkness. Separately, §26708(e) allows clear, colorless film of at least 88% visible light transmittance on the windshield, side and rear windows, with the glazing still meeting the federal 70% minimum, when the driver carries a certificate signed by a licensed dermatologist.
Under Franchise Agreement §7.25, each franchisee is responsible for complying with applicable tint law and must tell every customer the legal VLT limits before any automotive tint work begins.
