North Carolina window-tint regulations
North Carolina's tint law, N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-127(b) ('Window Tinting Restrictions'), sets front side windows at a minimum of 35% VLT on passenger cars, SUVs, minivans and pickups alike.
Rear side and rear windows must also allow at least 35% VLT on a passenger car, though multipurpose vehicles — minivans, pickups and similar vehicles built on a truck chassis or with off-road features, as defined at § 20-127(c)(9) — carry no VLT limit on windows behind the driver.
Windshield tint is permitted only along the top, extending no more than 5 inches below the top of the windshield or below the AS-1 line (whichever is longer), and § 20-127(c) applies this limit without exception, so neither the vehicle-class exceptions nor a medical permit relaxes it. Separately, an untinted clear film that does not obstruct vision and reduces or eliminates ultraviolet radiation may be applied to the windshield.
A medical exemption is available under § 20-127(f): a person with photosensitivity to visible light may apply to the DMV Drivers Medical Evaluation Program, with a physician-completed evaluation form, for a permit. Is NC's 35% VLT rule restrictive for a Charlotte operator?
